Cycling

Cycling in and around Greyton is good for both road/racing bikes and mountain bikes.

Road Cycling: The tar road between Greyton and the N2 is safe for riding as the road has a wide shoulder and there is relatively little traffic.

Mountain biking: There are far more options for mountain bikers as there are dirt roads to Riviersonderend, Villiersdorp and various district roads (most seem to lead to Krige!).

For single track riding there are several mountain bike trails through Greyton commonage that are open to cyclists. Maps are available from Zebra Moon andGreyton Tourism.Routes have been marked and  are easy to follow. New routes are always being added by local enthusiasts.See www.greytonmtb.co.za.

Events: There is an annual mountain bike and trail run event- The Greyton MTB Classic – with childrens; intermediate and difficult routes. This race negotiates passage through private land and so offers an opportunity to ride routes not normally available. This event is normally in the second half of June.

Genadendal MTB Mission : This mountain bike race and trail run is held in  November. This event starts and ends in the beautiful Moravian Church Square in Genadendal and following routes that are not normally open to the public. This event combines terrific routes, amazing scenery and a local flavour: imagine the Genadendal brass band and buchu tea. See greytonmtb.co.za  for all the details.

Bike hire :  Zebra Moon has 5 basic mountain bikes for hire.

Hiking

There are many hikes around Greyton. A big plus is that most walks or hikes begin at the edge of our small Village, so you can walk straight out the doors and begin your hike (no need to drive anywhere!)

Hiking trails:

  • Boesmanskloof trail: This trail between Greyton and McGregor is a 14 km hike. It is best to allocate a full day for this trail. It is important to note that the trail, while starting at the edge of Greyton, finishes 14kms  from McGregor. Some groups hike from Greyton, overnight at either Die Galg or Whipstock farm and hike back the following day.See the bottom of this page for information on accommodation at the McGregor end of the hike as well as transport.
  • Genadendal trail: This is a two day trail with an overnight stop in huts on the farm De Hoek. The trail begins and ends in Genadendal.

Short walks: there are 9 walks described in the Greyton visitor booklet which vary between one and three hours.Genadendal Hikes: There are two hikes to Genadendal. The first is a 7km walk and is a fairly easy walk although there are two steep hills. The second is a 5 to 6 hour hike along the mountainside, it is very beautiful but has a very steep start!

Walking in the Village: Greyton’s peaceful, tree-lined streets are ideal for walking. One can admire the beautiful mountain backdrop and appreciate the beautiful homes which all follow a traditional Cape architectural style.  One can easily clock up 5 kms and more on a varied route including the Gobos river, the upper end of Main Street which ends right up against the mountains and back along Park or Main Street.
